U.S. Election: Can Obama Replace Biden and Haley Replace Trump?
MICHELLE OBAMA

Analysis by a political scientist.

The German newspaper Der Spiegel writes that this summer Joe Biden may refuse to participate in the presidential election and nominate Michelle Obama, the wife of former US President Barack Obama.

According to the publication, Michelle Obama is already included in the list of potential candidates for which public opinion polls are conducted.

How likely is this scenario? Charter97.org spoke about this with Oleh Belokolos, Director of the Kyiv Centre for Information Resilience and former Counselor of the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada and Kenya:

— It seems to me that this scenario is unlikely, after all, with all due respect, she has not shown herself anywhere as a politician. Even Vice President Kamala Harris would be more likely to look like a figure to replace Biden.

Honestly, I would not trust such information, it seems to me that this is some kind of stuffing. This scenario looks extremely unlikely from what I have read and understood. Let's just say that if the Democrats had a candidate who could be comparable to the current president's candidacy, they would have designated it at an earlier stage. But at the moment, I do not see the expediency in this.

According to the latest information, the Democrats have collected a significant amount of funds for the presidential campaign, some messages are being prepared. A team of PR specialists is already actively working there, aimed precisely at promoting Biden's candidacy. Even from this point of view, I have great doubts, firstly, about the reliability of such information, and secondly, about the expediency of such movements.

— Are there any scenarios in which the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, will not reach the presidential race?

— In American realities, a presidential candidate is nominated for the primaries, not the election headquarters. The election headquarters is, in fact, a technical structure that works more on strategy: how to get out, with what messages, to what groups of voters, how to conduct an election campaign and so on.

And the personalities are decided by the electors who gave preference to Trump in the primaries of the Republican Party. The fact that Nikki Haley took a significant number of votes in the last primaries, and stopped her campaign a few months ago, indicates that there is a polarization of opinions among Republican voters. Yes, this is a kind of indicator, but a significant majority preferred Trump. Another thing is that legal proceedings are now unfolding, which, as far as I understand, cannot prevent him from running, but can affect the results and attitude towards him even among supporters of the Republican Party.
